Lutein

Lutein (pronounced LOO-teen) is a carotenoid, meaning a natural colorant or pigment, found in dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, plus various fruits and corn. Egg yolks are also sources of lutein.

Lutein provides nutritional support to our eyes and skin – the only organs of the body directly exposed to the outside environment.  Lutein has been linked to promoting healthy eyes through reducing the risk of macular degeneration.  Other studies suggest that a mixture of nutrients, including lutein, may provide supplemental antioxidant capacity to the skin, helping counteract free radical damage.

Lutein is one of the largest group of over 600 compound known as the carotenoid pigment. It is an efficient anti-oxidant, and therefore, it's able to protect cells in our body from free radical damages. In addition to anti-oxidant actions, lutein converts in our body to vitamin A which is an essential micronutrient for normal vision. Lutein in macula filters out potentially harmful blue lights and UV light, and protects optic nerve cells from damages.
Recent studies indicate that lutein is likely to be preventive of eyes from other dieases, such as cataracts and glaucoma, and other body parts from lung cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer and cardiovascular dieases.
Lutein can be used as coloring agent, additive, cosmetic and baccy for its bright-coloured, innocuity and high safety.

Lutein Esters

Lutein found in flower petals of marigold is chemically bound to various types of fatty acids. In these cases it is said that Lutein is esterified and is commonly known as lutein ester. Lutein can be obtained from extracts of marigold flowers (Tagetes erecta) that contain high concentration of lutein Ester. Lutein ester is extracted from marigold flowers in its natural form (without any structural modification) and has a long shelf life than free lutein.
Free Lutein and Lutein Ester consumed as food and food supplements have similar bioavailability as reported in several scientific studies on humans
